The Spa YouthZone was launched in May 2009 and provides an open access drop in facility for young people between the ages of 13-19. It aims to provide a safe place for young people to get them off the streets and offers a range of activities, information and other services. The youth zone is located in the centre of Droitwich on the high street and aims to be a hub of services for young people which benefits the local community.

What’s at the YouthZone? Predominately focusing on weekend provision the youth zone has facilities including TV, DVD, a pool table, games consoles and art equipment.It also has a recently refurbished café area offering food and drinks as well as internet facilities and seating areas.

Throughout the year the zone offers a range of projects and activities for young people to take part in such as music projects, alcohol and drugs awareness sessions and relationships and sexual health advice.

The Spa YouthZone is a community partnership project supported by Wychavon District Council and other key partners.

Youth Zone News – January 2010

The Spa Youth Zone can look forward to a bright future after being given permission to stay for good.

The Spa Youth Zone, which is located along Droitwich town centre’s High Street, has proved to be immensely popular. In fact, since it opened in May 2009, over 200 young people from Droitwich and the surrounding area regularly visit and use the facilities each week.

The Youth Zone is also popular with and has received support from various organisations and charities such as the Wychavon North & Central Children’s Team, The Prince’s Trust, WANDS Children Centre and Age Concern.

Weighing up the application for the venue to be used permanently as the Spa Youth Zone, Wychavon District Council’s Development Control Committee concluded that there were “significant wider benefits of the youth zone for the town”, and so approved the application.

Rob Mace, the Spa Youth Zone Manager, said: “This is great news as it means we can now start to make plans for the future and fully establish ourselves as a place for young people in Droitwich. Our successful application shows that young people can make a difference when they stand up for what they believe in, and I’d like to thank everyone who listened to their views and to those who can see that the Youth Zone is a great place for the young people in their community.”

He added: “There has been so much support from both agencies and the young people using the zone, that it’s highlighted to everyone involved how having a central youth facility can really improve their lives. That’s why it’s so vital that the zone can now stay open in the longer term.”

The Spa Youth Zone provides a safe and friendly place for young people to meet and hang out with their friends, get involved in interesting and unusual activities and classes, as well as take part in important educational and awareness courses.

Some of the activities organised in 2009 included:

• film evenings;
• hip-hop MC workshops;
• music and arts;
• nail and beauty sessions;
• a rail safety workshop at the ‘No Messin’ event in Cardiff;
• safe driving training; and
• fire and water safety training.

The Youth Zone will offer lots more exciting events and activities throughout 2010, as well as offering an IT room with internet access, a pool table, refreshments, and somewhere for young people to simply sit and chat.

Rob Mace said: “We still need to secure funding to keep running, but now we have the security that we’re not here on a trial basis and young people and agencies can use the zone more regularly, everyone involved can work towards making the Youth Zone a hub of youth activity to benefit everyone in Droitwich Spa.”

Youth Zone News – January 2010

The Droitwich Spa Youth Zone is launching new sessions for 11 – 13 year olds. The High Street facility has proved very popular with 13 -17 year olds, with over 200 using it each week. It offers a place for young people to meet with friends in a safe environment, participate in projects, gain volunteering experience and get help and advice on issues affecting their lives. Facilities include chill out areas, TV, music deck, gaming, pool table, computer suite, art and music activities, games and refreshments.

The new sessions for 11 – 13 year olds are in response to regular requests from young people in this age group who regularly turn up but aren’t old enough for the main sessions. They will also have somewhere to go when they meet up with friends in town. The new sessions will take place on Fridays from 4 – 6pm and Saturdays from 2 – 4pm. The sessions will offer opportunity to chill out with friends, play games, watch TV and participate in projects to raise awareness of ‘life as a teenager’. The young people will be expected to follow the Youth Zone ‘code of conduct’ and the sessions will be run by youth workers along with volunteers.

The new service will be launched on Saturday 13 February, from 2 – 4pm, giving opportunity for the youngsters and their parents to call in, look around and have a chat with staff.

The Spa Youth Zone is also looking for more volunteers to assist with running both the 11 -13 and 13 – 17 sessions and would be pleased to hear from anyone who might be interested in helping.

Rob Mace, Spa Youth Zone Manager, said: “We are pleased to be expanding our service to offer sessions for this younger age group.”

He added: “We know they like to meet up in town and Spa Youth Zone is an ideal place for them to chill out with friends in a safe environment and participate in fun activities.”
